Warriors Win Scrappy Game over Visiting Tigers
Despite sloppy play, the Warriors pulled away
The Nelson Warriors found themselves victorious 96-79 in a rough and sometimes tumble game against the Doane Tigers tonight, a matchup that was at times chippy, consistently scrappy, but always highly competitive. Despite the comfortable final margin, this bout between two fierce adversaries had the feeling that the outcome meant to both teams than just a mid-December game. With 40 total personal fouls called, 27 steals, and 39 turnovers, the Warriors were forced to play a style of game they were not entirely accustomed to. Yet, facing a swarming full-court press nearly throughout, once they could get into their transition and half-court offenses, they were able to find open space to force the Tigers into the quick-paced game that has been so successful for them so far in the season.
Despite the occasional sloppiness, head coach Kole Ebert was nonetheless pleased with his team's performance. "This one was a little rough and tumble. More than we're used to. But we fought through and despite making more mistakes than I would prefer, we kept our cool and pulled out the win."
Harley Upton and Rob Jenkins came through despite the pressure in a big way, putting up 26 and 24 points, respectively. Upton lived downtown, draining 6-10 from beyond the arc while Jenkins shot an efficient 9-14 from the field. They each further dished out 5 assists. Orlando Gonzales helped control the offense with a team-high 6 assists while recording 11 points including three 3's, while Terrin Ross led the bench unit with a 10 point and 11 rebound double-double.
For the Tigers, Glavine Mcdonald scored 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, both team-highs.
Up next for the Warriors is the Tabor BLANKS on December 20 at 7pm in the Scott Activity Center
