Lady Warriors Honor Tatiana Ayala with Victory over Bethesda
Ayala plays the opening moments of Nelson's double-header
The Nelson Lady Warriors' Women's Basketball team (3-14) delivered an emotional, hard-fought Senior Night victory, defeating the Bethesda Lion Angels 55-49 at Scott Activity Center, in front of a full house participating in a stirring White Out to honor their lone senior, Tatiana Ayala.
Tatiana, sidelined for the previous two games with an injury, received the ultimate tribute: she started the game and played the opening moments in front of her family and a packed, white-clad crowd. In a heroic moment that harkened the minds of the aged to Willis Reed in the 1970 NBA Finals, she fought through pain to record a layup, her team's first basket, before being subbed out for the remainder of the contest. From that point forward, her teammates played with purpose, determined to send their senior out with a win.
The Warriors built momentum early, stretching a lead to 10 points in the second quarter behind active defense and sharp ball movement. Bethesda, desperate to play spoiler, clawed back to within five at halftime. Nelson pushed the advantage back to nine in the third, but the Lion Angels stayed resilient, holding Nelson to a narrow three-point edge heading into the fourth – although two missed Bethesda free throws with 3.6 seconds left in the period kept the margin from shrinking further.
But the fourth quarter belonged to the Warriors. They opened on a 12-5 run to seize a 47-37 lead, showing the poise and fight Tatiana had inspired all night. However, Bethesda refused to fold, ripping off an 8-0 spurt to cut the deficit to two points with 1:45 remaining and turning the gym into a pressure cooker.
From there, Nelson answered every challenge. First, Jordan Hankston calmly sank two free throws to push the lead back to four with 90 seconds left. Bethesda's Mark Gonzales answered with a layup, but the Warriors broke through the Lion Angels' full-court press twice in succession: first for an Emma Koker layup, then for a Nya Misi Havatone finish that restored a six-point cushion and sent the White Out crowd to its feet. Bethesda's Mizuke Higashijima hit two free throws to trim it back to four, but Sophia Morón sealed the victory with two clutch free throws of her own with 17.8 seconds remaining, icing the 55-49 final.
Chloe Warren led the Warriors off the bench with 14 points and 5 rebounds, and one of her teams 13 steals. Emma Koker recorded her second straight double-double, scoring 10 points, snagging 13 rebounds, and recording a career-high 6 blocks. Juliana Kirker also recorded a double-double, the first of the season for her, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds, off the bench. Sophia Morón was all over the court for the Warriors, finishing with 6 points, 6 assists, 3 steals, while Jordan Hankston finished with 4 points, 4 rebounds, and a season-high 5 steals.
The Lion Angels were led by Mary Gonzales' 18 points and 8 rebounds, sharing the team-high in rebounds with both Mizuki Higashijima and Genevieve Saechow.
Every Lady Warriors who stepped onto the court were led by their inner Warriors spirit, recording the victory that was a fitting tribute to Tatiana Ayala. The Lady Warriors showed heart, resilience, and composure when it mattered most, turning Senior Night into a celebration to remember.
The Lady Warriors wrap up their season at home versus the Ottawa Spirit on Tuesday, February 17, at 5:30pm. Be sure to come out and celebrate the squad in their final on-court appearance together!
