Lady Warriors Fall to Pioneers in Tight Match
Jump out to 8-0 lead early and stay competitive throughout
The Nelson Lady Warriors' Women's Basketball team (2-14) showed flashes of their growing potential but ultimately fell 44-32 to the Pacific Union Pioneers in a tightly contested, low-scoring affair that stayed competitive until the final minutes.
The Warriors came out flying, jumping to an 8-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter by playing active, swarming defense. They held Pacific Union scoreless for the game's first eight minutes, forcing nine first-quarter turnovers and dictating the pace with relentless energy and vocal communication. The Pioneers eventually clawed their way back, but the middle quarters turned into a gritty, back-and-forth fight where neither team could stretch the lead beyond five points at any point.
Entering the fourth quarter, the Warriors remained very much in striking distance, and maintaining their aggressiveness on both ends of the floor, the game remained a nail-biter until the final three minutes. That's when Pacific Union found another gear, outscoring Nelson 16-6 down the stretch to pull away and secure the victory.
Emma Koker was a star standout for the Lady Warriors, dominating the glass with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in just 28 minutes before foul trouble sidelined her late in the fourth. Juliana Kirker delivered another strong all-around performance, finishing with 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. Sophia Morón orchestrated the offense like a maestro, nearly recording a triple-double with 4 points, 7 rebounds, and a team-high 9 assists while keeping the Warriors in rhythm throughout.
Michelle Lugo led the Pioneers with 12 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks in the victory.
The Lady Warriors will take an extended break between games before they take on Bethesda in the Scott Activity Center at 5pm on February 11.
