Orediggers Need Historic Night to Take Down Lady Warriors
Warriors lose despite promising signs and balanced scoring
The Nelson Lady Warriors' Women's Basketball team (2-13) faced a formidable challenge on the road, falling 98-42 to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in a game dominated by one of the most explosive individual performances the Warriors have ever seen.
Sofia Baldessari put on a clinic for the hosts, pouring in a program-record 45 points and adding a record 5 steals in just 26 minutes of action, the scoring, setting an opponent-record for the Nelson program as well.
Although the Lady Warriors trailed wire-to-wire, they refused to go quietly. Nelson showed multiple encouraging signs of growth, increasing their scoring output in each successive quarter while flashing bursts of promising play despite the significant threat of their opponent. A spirited 7-0 run in the second quarter injected life into the sideline, while a strong defensive stand in the fourth limited the high-powered Orediggers to a game-low 19 points. Offensively, Nelson saved their best for last, posting a game-high 15 points in the final frame.
Nya Misi Havatone led the Warriors with a team-high 14 points, providing consistent scoring in the tough road environment. Tatiana Ayala anchored the interior with a team-best 7 rebounds, while battling relentlessly on the glass against a larger Mines frontcourt.
Up next for the Lady Warriors is January 3, at Colorado Christian University at 1pm. They then take a short break before playing at Bethesda University on January 9, their final road tilt, before finally home for the schedule's final six games.
