Lady Warriors Break Through with First Victory over the Season
The Nelson offense led an offensive stampede over the Mustangs
The Nelson Lady Warriors' Women's Basketball team (1-6) exploded onto the win column with an electrifying first victory of the season, cruising to a dominant wire-to-wire 75-59 victory over the University of the Southwest (NM) Mustangs (4-2) to split the weekend series after a disappointing five-point loss on Friday night.
The Lady Warriors came out roaring, storming to a 6-0 lead and never looked back, eventually ballooning their advantage to a spectacular 24-2 lead midway through the first quarter, closing the period up 30-8 and leaving the Mustangs in the dust. In the second quarter, Nelson kept the pressure on their guests, doubling up Southwest 46-23 at halftime through crisp ball movement and lockdown defense.
The third quarter saw more of the same as the Lady Warriors stretched the lead to 68-42, before they glided to the final buzzer, securing the long-awaited breakthrough win that Warriors hopefuls believe is the turning point in their team's season.
Nelson shot lights-out on the afternoon, draining 8-of-18 from beyond the arc while connecting on 42.4% from the field overall in a strong offensive attack that overwhelmed Southwest. On the opposite side of the ball, the defense was nothing short of stellar, clamping down to hold the Mustangs to a chilly 7-of-28 from three and a meager 19-of-67 (28.4%) from the floor. While the Lady Warriors rarely visited the charity stripe themselves (nailing four of just five attempts), their discipline on the defensive end shone through with only seven fouls committed.
Up next for the Ladies will be at the University of La Vern Leopards at 2pm on Saturday, November 22, in La Verne, CA, about 30 miles west of Los Angeles.
