Lady Warriors Basketball Falls to Park University
Drop to 0-2 despite strong defensive showing.
The Nelson Lady Warriors' Women's Basketball team dropped their second game of the season 78-55, despite a gritty effort to the Park University (Gilbert) Buccaneers in a home matchup against a more experienced foe.
The Warriors battled fiercely from tip-off, hanging tough throughout despite the Buccaneers' experience and size. Nelson's defense showed flashes of tenacity, forcing 20 turnovers, and despite committing 34 turnovers themselves, holding their opponent to only 16 points off of their miscues. Where the Warriors truly shone was at the free-throw line, converting an impressive 15-of-17 attempts compared to the Buccaneers' 9-of-10.
Juliana K paced Nelson with a team-high 10 points, providing consistent scoring throughout. Tatoana Ayala nearly notched a double-double, finishing with 8 points and 7 rebounds while adding a block and a steal to anchor her team's defense. Off the bench, Gabrielle Haskie sparked the reserves with 8 points and 3 steals, regularly disrupting Park's rhythm, while Maci Chavez rounded out the key contributors with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, facilitating plays and keeping the Warriors in the fight.
The fourth quarter highlighted Nelson's unyielding spirit, as they outhustled the Buccaneers in a strong closing push that narrowed the gap and hinted at their season potential. Though the loss marks a challenging start, the Ladies played with the spirit of a true Warrior, most importantly as they build chemistry in their hunt for their first win of the campaign.
Up next for the Lady Warriors will be a road matchup at the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on November 8 at 6pm in Durango, Colorado.
