Nelson Warriors Women's Basketball Closes out Season with Victory
The Women defeat Nav Tech 68-47
The women Warriors basketball team finished their second season in program-history on a high note, defeating rival Nav Tech in a wire-to-wire victory 68-47 before a raucous crowd at Scott Activity Center on Tuesday night. The win was their 4th on the season, and second versus the Skyhawk, sweeping the season series.
The Warriors opened the first quarter with a 13-2 run led by six points from Makayla Powell, who finished the game with 8 points, all in the first quarter, and 6 rebounds. The first half was defined by tremendous defense for the Warriors, who held the Skyhawk to single-digit scoring in each quarter, ultimately building a 21-point lead before the halftime horn.
Navajo Tech opened the second half hoping to cut into the Nelson lead, but the Warriors quickly fought back and behind the quick scoring efforts of Maci Chavez and Tatiana Ayala, pushed the lead back into the 20's, where it would remain throughout the remainder of the quarter. The Warriors continued to put their foot on the pedal in the fourth and, taking advantage of several Skyhawk miscues, used a lightning fast 10-0 run in the first 2:43 to open up a game-high 30-point lead, and from there, cruising to victory.
Nyamisi Havatone nailed a 5 3's en route to 19 points, both season-highs for the guard. A defensive anchor against the Skyhawk, Havatone grabbed 5 rebounds and snagged 2 steals for good measure. Maci Chavez finished with 15 points, one short of her season-high, along with 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Tatiana Ayala finished with 8 points, to go along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists, before fouling out.
Sarah Dennison led the Skyhawk with 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 turnovers, all off the bench.
Congratulations to the women Warriors on ending the season so strongly!
