Warriors cannot tame Mustangs in New Mexico
Short-handed Warriors put up the good fight but ultimately fall short.
The Nelson University Women's Warriors opened up a difficult early-season six-game road trip with at the Southwest Lady Mustangs (New Mexico). Playing short-handed, with only seven players dressed, the Warriors put up a valiant effort early, trailing by only six points at half. Undeterred by the steep mountain they were forced to climb, the Warriors began the second half dedicated to making a strong push hoping to complete both the comeback and the upset. Ultimately however, their depleted roster to start the trip got the best of them, out-scored by the Mustangs by 21 points, for a 74-47 loss.
Despite the outcome, three Nelson scorers finished with double-digit scoring, led by freshman Kristina Diaz' 11 points. "Despite having a few players missing…our team is learning and growing. We have a spirited group that won't quit no matter what, and you can't help but love their effort," said Diaz following the game. "I feel that a victory for us is coming soon and we are getting better."
Freshmen Unique Begishie and Makayla Powell each finished with 10 points, their effort on both ends of the floor contributing to the Warriors' beyond the box score.
The two teams meet again in Hobbs, New Mexico on November 2, before the Warriors travel back to Arizona when they face Ottawa University on November 19.
Coach Gamal Smalley continued to remain proud of his squad and encourages students and fans to keep showing his team the love and support they have been receiving thus far in the season. "Despite the obstacles they have faced so far, these women never put their heads down, they never sulk, they never take a possession off. Even with today's outcome we continue to make strides every game. They are putting in the kind of effort that is expected of a Warrior, and that should make the University and our community just as proud of them as I am."
