Lady Warriors Softball Closes Florida with Split
Takes Game 1 of a double-header, to finish with Space Coast Series 2-2
The Nelson Lady Warriors softball team (9-13) concluded the Space Coast Spring Games in Viera, FL, by splitting their second doubleheader with a dominant 6-1 victory over the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils in Game 1 before dropping a tight 2-0 decision to the Keiser University Seahawks in Game 2.
Game 1: Nelson 6, Lawrence Tech 1
The Warriors jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, then added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 6-1 final.
Maritza Rodriguez had a breakout day at the plate, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Catalina Sanchez and Charli York each contributed two hits, while Isenya Silva drove in two runs without recording a hit herself, capitalizing on her opportunities with productive outs and smart base-running.
In the circle, Kelly Katalbas was masterful, throwing six strong innings and allowing just four hits and one run. She walked only one batter and struck out four, keeping the Blue Devils off balance all game and giving the offense plenty of breathing room.
Game 2: Keiser 2, Nelson 0
The nightcap turned into a classic pitchers' duel. Araeya Cosay delivered another strong outing, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing just six hits and one earned run. She walked three and struck out two, keeping the Seahawks' offense in check while keeping her team in the game, despite facing a very tough opponent on the opposite side of the field.
Offensively, the Warriors managed only three hits: Maritza Rodriguez (her fourth of the day), Estevannie Rojas, and Destiny Medina each with one. Thus, as strong as Cosay was, Keiser's starter was even sharper, allowing just four base runners total (three hits and one walk), never allowing a runner past first base, while setting down the side in order three times, and striking out three to improve to 12-1 on the year.
Despite the shutout loss, Nelson's pitching staff combined to keep the game close throughout. Cosay's quality start and the team's defensive effort limited damage against a strong opponent, but the offense couldn't generate enough traffic to break through.
