Lady Warriors are Swept by Spirit
Nelson Offense failed to start until late in both contests
The Nelson Lady Warriors softball team (6-12) closed out February with a challenging stretch, dropping their second consecutive doubleheader, this time on the road at Willow Canyon High School in Phoenix, falling 6-0 to the Ottawa Spirit in Game 1 and 11-1 (4.5 innings) in Game 2.
Game 1: Ottawa 6, Nelson 0
Ottawa set the tone early, scoring one run in the top of the first and exploding for five more in the third to build an insurmountable 6-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Warriors struggled to generate consistent offense, managing only three hits across the contest, with the club's first base knock not coming until Vanessa Philpot led off the top of the fifth with a clean single.
Stephany Aguirre entered in relief to start the bottom of the fourth and provided a bright spot, tossing three solid innings with just 2 hits and 1 walk allowed while striking out 2, resiliently limiting further damage late.
Game 2: Ottawa 11, Nelson 1 (4.5 innings – Run-Rule)
Ottawa once jumped out aggressively, plating three runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second to take early control. Nelson scratched across their lone run in the top of the fourth when freshman Charli York crushed the second home run of her young career – a solo shot that briefly cut the Warriors' to just 5-1.
However, the Spirit responded with authority, adding six runs in the bottom of the fourth to blow the game open at 11-1 and trigger the early end as the second game was shortened by the run-rule mercy after four and a half innings.
Nelson again managed just three hits total, but defensively the team showed marked improvement from Friday's doubleheader, committing only two errors across both games (one per contest), a step forward in cleaning up miscues that had plagued recent outings.
