Lady Warriors Lose Double-Header
Shut out in both games despite solid pitching
The Nelson Lady Warriors softball team (6-10) dropped both ends of a doubleheader against the Arizona Christian Firestorm at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix, AZ, falling 7-0 in Game 1 and 8-0 in Game 2 a difficult afternoon for the Warriors who struggled to generate consistent offense.
Game 1: Arizona Christian 7, Nelson 0
The Warriors managed just five hits total in the contest, with their first base knock not coming until two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Arizona Christian, meanwhile, pounded out 13 hits and capitalized on timely scoring bursts – five runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth – to build a lead that would prove to be too much for the Nelson squad.
Starting pitcher Araeya Cosay battled valiantly, allowing just two earned runs across her outing, but defensive miscues contributed to the majority of the damage as the Firestorm took advantage of extra opportunities. Estevannie Rojas provided the offensive highlight for Nelson, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game 2: Arizona Christian 8, Nelson 0
The nightcap followed a similar script. Briyanei Celaya led off the bottom of the first with a single, and Destiny Medina added a base hit in the third, unfortunately, the only two hits Nelson could muster all game. Arizona Christian once again racked up 13 hits and pushed across runs steadily.
Kelly Katalbas took the ball for the Warriors and did her best to limit damage, surrendering only five earned runs while battling through traffic. Errors again played a role in the unearned runs, allowing the Firestorm to pull away.
