Nelson Softball Sweeps Bushnell in Decisive Double-Header
Nelson wins in walk-off in Game 1, and Run-Rule in Game 2
The Lady Warriors recorded a commanding sweep in a doubleheader against Bushnell at Rose Mofford Sports Complex, claiming both games in thrilling fashion, showcasing resilience, timely hitting, and dominant pitching.
Game 1: Nelson 6, Bushnell 5 (Walk-Off)
Bushnell struck early, plating three runs in the top of the first inning, adding one more in the second and another in the fourth to build a 5-0 lead. But starting pitcher Kelly Katalbas settled in and locked down the Beacons from there, giving her offense time to mount a comeback.
The Warriors finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Estevannie Rojas led off with a single, and after two quick outs, Vanessa Philpot delivered a clutch single to right that drove in Rojas for Nelson's first run of the game.
In the fifth, after the first two batters were retired, Briyanei Celaya reached on an error, stole second to apply immediate pressure, and scored on a Kiley Hernandez single up the middle to make it 5-2.
The Warriors threatened again in the sixth but couldn't break through. Down to their final three outs in the bottom of the seventh, the rally ignited: Emily Quigg reached on an error, Catalina Sanchez flied out, but Amber Lopez singled and Celaya reached on another error to load the bases. Kiley Hernandez then reached on a fielder's choice that plated Quigg, cutting the deficit to 5-4. Rojas stepped to the plate with the bases still loaded and delivered the hero moment: a scorching double to center field that cleared the bases and sent the Lady Warriors streaming out of the dugout in celebration for the dramatic 6-5 walk-off win.
Game 2: Nelson 8, Bushnell 0 (5 innings – Run-Rule)
Momentum carried straight into the nightcap. Briyanei Celaya walked to lead off the bottom of the first, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored two batters later on another wild pitch to give Nelson an early 1-0 lead.
After tacking on a second run in the third, the Warriors exploded in the bottom of the fifth. Vanessa Philpot walked to open the inning, Catalina Sanchez singled to left, and Destiny Medina singled to the catcher to load the bases. Celaya walked to force in a run, and after two outs, Estevannie Rojas crushed a grand slam to right field that blew the game open. Stephany Aguirre immediately followed with a double, and Mikki Green drove her in to cap a five-run inning.
Bushnell went down quietly in the top of the fifth, and in the bottom half, the Warriors loaded the bases again for Rojas, who delivered a single to plate Destiny Medina for the eighth run—triggering the run-rule mercy in only five innings.
Yanelyssia Chavez was masterful in the circle, throwing a complete-game shutout on an efficient outing. She allowed just 4 hits, walked none, and kept Bushnell off the bases entirely outside of those four singles.
