Lady Warriors Complete Epic Comeback in Home Opening Split with Coyotes
Trailed 4-0 through 4.5inn., but walk it off in 7th
The Nelson Lady Warriors softball team (1-7) broke through for their first victory of the season in thrilling fashion during their home opener doubleheader against the College of Idaho Coyotes, splitting the twin bill with a dramatic 6-5 walk-off win in Game 1 before falling 11-4 in Game 2 at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix, AZ.
Game 1: Nelson 6, College of Idaho 5 (Walk-Off)
The Coyotes struck early and hard, jumping to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning utilizing small ball and capitalizing on a Nelson error. After their lead-off batter reached on a miscue, four of the next five batters reached base, and the only out of the sequence came on a groundout to first that still plated a run from third.
The Warriors struggled to generate offense over the next four innings, managing just one single in the second otherwise mulling through three three-up, three-down frames. But the dam finally cracked in the bottom of the fifth when Catalina Sanchez drew a two-out walk, and Stephany Aguirre followed with a double to right-center that drove Sanchez home and advanced Aguirre to third on the throw. Though stranded, the breakthrough gave Nelson life.
In the sixth, Briyanei Celaya opened the inning with a single to center, Kiley Hernandez followed with a single up the middle, and a passed ball advanced both runners before Estavannie Rojas walked to load the bases with no outs. Then, Charli York stepped to the plate and delivered the moment of the day: she crushed a pitch down the middle that sailed back, back, back, and gone—a majestic and dramatic grand slam that flipped the score to 5-4 and sent the home crowd into a frenzy.
The College of Idaho refused to go quietly, muscling a run across in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 5 apiece. But in the bottom half of the frame, the Warriors loaded the bases once again: Aguirre singled to center, Amber Lopez singled through the left side, and Celaya singled to load them up. With the winning run 90 feet away, Kiley Hernandez stepped in and delivered a clutch single to left field, plating the walk-off run and securing the 6-5 victory – the club's first win of the season.
Kally Katalbas was masterful in the circle once again, tossing a complete game on an efficient 100 pitches. She allowed 10 hits and 5 runs, walked 1, and struck out 2 in a gutsy performance that kept Nelson in striking distance throughout.
Game 2: College of Idaho 11, Nelson 4
Adrenaline and momentum from the Game 1 walk-off carried over for the Warriors early who, trailing 1-0 after the first, erupted in the bottom half for three runs. Estavannie Rojas smashed a bases-loaded double to right-center that drove in two, and a passed ball allowed Charli York to score from third, giving Nelson a brief 3-1 lead.
Unfortunately, the Coyotes answered with runs in each of the first four innings, including a five-run explosion in the fourth, and added two more in the seventh to pull away. Aside from a bases-loaded single that drove in Catalina Sanchez in the fifth, the Warriors were unable to generate consistent offense, managing only 2 hits total against a stifling Coyote attack that racked up 16 hits.
The split marked a bittersweet but encouraging home opener. Game 1 delivered the long-awaited first win in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion, highlighted by York's grand slam, Hernandez's walk-off heroics, and Katalbas' complete-game grit. While Game 2 slipped away, the early surge and fight showed the team's growing confidence.
Up next for the Lady Warriors will be a double-header Friday, the 13th against Bushnell at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex, first pitch of game 1 at Twelve Noon, with the second kicking off at 2pm.
