Lady Warriors Drop Twin-Bill to Westcliff
Grace Madril smacked an RBI triple in Game 1
The Nelson Lady Warriors softball team (0-6) dropped both ends of a doubleheader against the Westcliff Warriors, falling 4-3 in the opener and 8-0 in the second game, continuing their early-season search for their first victory.
Game 1: Westcliff 4, Nelson 3
The Lady Warriors fell into an early 3-0 hole after a shaky bottom of the first inning, but showed immediate fight in the top of the second. Kiley Hernandez reached on a fielding error that allowed Grace Madril to score and cut the deficit to 3-1. Hernandez then stole second base, and on the throw down, the catcher's relay skipped into the outfield for another error allowing Briyanei Celaya to come all the way home from first and make it a one-run game at 3-2.
The Warriors kept the pressure on throughout, but Westcliff held the slim lead until the top of the sixth. Charli York led off the inning with a booming triple (the most exciting play in softball) sparking hope on the Nelson bench. Madril followed immediately with an RBI single to plate York and knot the score at 3-3.
Unfortunately, Westcliff answered right back in the bottom half, scratching across the go-ahead run to reclaim the lead and hold on for the 4-3 victory. Despite the late rally, Nelson couldn't manufacture the tying or winning run in the final innings.
Game 2: Westcliff 8, Nelson 0
The nightcap proved tougher offensively for the Lady Warriors, who managed only 3 hits and drew zero walks all game. Westcliff capitalized early and often, pushing across two runs in both the second and third innings before adding three more in the fourth to build a comfortable cushion. Nelson's offense struggled to generate consistent pressure, and the Golden Eagles closed out the sweep with relative ease.
Up next for the Warriors will be a double-header against the College of Idaho at Rose Mofford Sports Complex on Thursday, February 12, at 12 and 2pm.
