Anthony Berrios' Hat Trick Helps Propel Nelson at Bethesda
The Junior recorded the club's second-ever hat trick in 4-3 victory.
The Nelson Warriors' Men's Soccer team (6-6-3) closed out the road portion of their inaugural season with a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Bethesda Lion Angels (1-8-1) in Anaheim, CA, powered by the hat-trick heroics of Anthony Berrios in a back-and-forth match that kept every soccer fan in attendance on the edge of their seats.
The Lion Angels pounced early, grabbing a quick 1-0 lead on a clinical strike that put the Nelson defense on their collective back foot. However, undeterred, the Warriors responded in kind, as Berrios leveled the score with his first goal of the night, assisted by Damian Sanchez on a clever through ball that left the Bethesda defenders locked up. Determined to push the Warriors to their limit, the Bethesda strikers regained the lead for their squad shortly after, when a Lion Angel fired in another goal past the Nelson goalkeeper, regaining a one-goal lead for the home team.
But just before halftime, Berrios struck again. Recieving a sharp pass from Gabriel Daniel, the junior knotted the game at 2 apiece when he pushed the ball into the net, keeping Nelson alive as both squads headed into the locker-room tired from the energetic first forty minutes.
The second half started with a jolt, when the Lion Angels capitalized just two minutes in to reclaim a 3-2 advantage. Perfectly prepared for such situations by head coach Barry Swartz, just 15 minutes later the Warriors once again returned the favor, when Parker Linhart buried the equalizer, set up by Pablo Pulido's pinpoint delivery.
The two teams fought, vying valiantly for the tiebreaker, and ultimate victory, a decision the Nelson men were determined to grab for themselves. Always the squad wrought with Warrior spirit, mere minutes remaining before the official's final call, Berrios completed his hat-trick in style, slotting home a decisive winner on another crisp assist from Pulido second helper of the match, to secure the 4-3 edge and send the squad home with a charge.
Nelson's defense held firm through the tense final stretch, repelling Bethesda's desperate pushes to steal back the lead and earn one final equalizer, to no avail.
The Warriors' regular season ends vs this same Bethesda squad at 2pm on November , at Christ Church of the Valley in Peoria, AZ
