Warriors Soccer Squads Host Clinic for CCV Athletes
200 children attended Friday evening's event
The men's and women's soccer squads for Nelson University hosted a clinic Friday night for the Christ Church of the Valley Stars on the CCV soccer fields at 7007 W Happy Valley Rd in Peoria. The Nelson student-athletes were tasked with teaching the soccer stars of tomorrow the skills that make Nelson's soccer stars of today so well prepared to begin their inaugural seasons. Over 200 children attended the event with the University student-athletes eager to take time to spread the word of Christ through both word and action.
For students of Nelson University, this week is moving week, a stress that befalls all who live on campus. Moreover, these particular student-athletes are already gearing up for the start of their respective seasons, maneuvering through a full schedule that includes regular practices and training sessions. Yet, their sacrifice of time was well noted and appreciated by both the children and their families, each one of them joyful to have had the opportunity to learn from such respected sportsmen.
The clinicians led their younger counterparts through a series of organized drills that included learning proper techniques in dribbling, passing, shooting, positional defense, and general overall fundamentals. Barry Swartz and Jeffrey Penzone, head coaches for both the men's and women's clubs, respectively, helped to organize and lead the evening's program, which hopefully will become an annual event.
With the men's anticipated regular season opener rained out on Thursday night due to severe monsoon storms in the area, both the men's and women's soccer squads will officially open their schedules at home on Saturday, August 23, on the very fields they hosted the clinic Friday night.
