Warriors Men Go Cold in Second Half in Loss to Justice
Nelson ends road portion of calendar
The Warriors' final road outing of the regular season turned into a nightmare on Friday the 13th, as they dropped an 83-64 decision at Justice University to the Lions.
At the start, it seemed like Nelson was well in control. The Warriors shot of the gate extra sharp in the first half, hitting 50% of their shots from the floor. Zoe Holman led the way with 14 points in that stanza, while Calvin Windley chipped in 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, as the two teams battled to a 35-35 tie at the break.
However, things unraveled quickly after intermission as the Warriors' shooting cooled dramatically to just 24.1% overall, and they failed to make a single three-pointer in the second half. Justice capitalized with their physical presence inside, dominating the glass by a 20-9 margin over the final 20 minutes (and 15 overall for the contest), and the Lions ignited the comeback with an 11-2 burst right out of the locker room, pulling away decisively for the 19-point victory.
Holman was lights out for most of the night, finishing with a game and season-high-tying 27 points, including 11-14 from the charity stripe, along with 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists, and a block. Orlando Gonzales had a strong night as well, finishing with 20 points, however 1-6 from beyond the arc was uncharacteristically poor for the normally sharp shooter. Windley finished with 13 points and 8 boards, but the trio's efforts was unfortunately no enough, as the remainder of the Warriors participants finished with a combined 4 points, 8 rebounds, and 0 assists.
The Nelson men will have a longer stretch than usual to correct the mistakes of Friday night as they do not return to the court again until they take on the Northern New Mexico Eagles on Saturday, February 21, at 2pm at the Scott Activity Center.
