Nelson Men's Basketball Wins Tight Game at Northern New Mexico
Pulls out 88-84 victory behind career games from Keron Bailey and Calvin Windley.
The Nelson Warriors' Men's Basketball team (3-1) grinded out a hard-earned 88-84 road victory over the Northern New Mexico Eagles (1-4) in a difficult, back-and-forth battle that came down to the final possessions, testing their championship mettle every step of the way.
"That was a good game," remarked head coach Kole Ebert after his team's tough victory. "I'm sure it was a lot more fun to watch from the stands than it was to coach, but I am proud that our guys pulled through. The Eagles threw everything at us, and time and again, we withstood their hits…This will be a great learning experience for us."
The game was a seesaw battle from the tip, with neither side able to build more than a slim margin as leads changed hands multiple times amid physical play on both ends. The Eagles attempted 31 3's on the afternoon, nailing 13, but only 41.8% from the field for the game, the Warriors' stifling defense which frustrated Northern New Mexico all game arguably the difference in the outcome. Relying more on their athletes creating the best shots they can find, Nelson made 50% of their 3's (9-18), and a blistering 53.2% from the field for the game.
Keron Bailey anchored the Warriors' offensive attack with a monster performance, erupting for 29 points on an efficient 12-of-19 from the field while hauling in 7 rebounds and swiping 3 steals, consistently delivering in key moments to keep his team within striking distance at all times.
Off the bench, Calvin Windley provided a massive spark, pouring in 16 points while dominating the glass with a game-high 17 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists in a relentless all-around effort that included 8 offensive rebounds which fueled numerous second-chance opportunities. Terrin Ross proved clutch down the stretch, tallying 13 points and 5 rebounds with timely buckets that helped Nelson regain control in crunch time, while Zoe Holman lit it up from deep, knocking down 4-of-7 three-pointers for 12 points to stretch the Eagles' defense and open driving lanes.
For Northern New Mexico, Ja'Kwon Hill and Jesus Mendoza led the charge with 27 points apiece in a valiant push, keeping the Eagles in striking distance throughout, but Nelson's defensive stops and free-throw accuracy in the closing minutes sealed the deal.
The win extends the Warriors' strong start, which was made difficult by the team's front-loaded road schedule The victory concluded a brutal five-game road trip which they finished with one regular season loss.
Up next for the Warriors is back-to-back home games against the University of the Southwest. The home opener on Friday, November 14, at 7pm, with the second game a matinee the following day at 2pm.
