Warriors Baseball Wins in 9th
Scores final five runs for come-from-behind victory.
The Nelson Warriors' baseball team (22-23) pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind victory on the road, defeating the Park University Buccaneers 5-4 in nine innings.
Park jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the third and two more in the fifth, while the Warriors struggled to get their offense going until the seventh inning. It was in the seventh that Nelson was finally able to push a few runners across the plate when Aaron Bazan singled to open the frame, stole second (his second steal of the season), then later scored on a catcher's error after Gerardo Paco put the ball in play. Paco eventually advanced to third and came home on a Jimmy Holloway pop fly to right field, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
After a scoreless eighth, Nelson loaded the bases in the top of the ninth. With one out, Gerardo Paco scored on a wild pitch and Matthew Schulz walked on another wild pitch that also allowed Sam Hess to score, tying the game at 4-4. A third consecutive wild pitch advanced Schulz to second, and Brandon Ramirez's groundout brought home Jimmy Holloway with the go-ahead run, giving the Warriors a 5-4 lead.
Eli Arsenault came on in relief in the eighth and closed the door in the bottom of the ninth, earning his first win of the season after a two-inning outing. The Warriors used just three pitchers in the game, highlighted by Esteban Acevedo's strong 4.1 innings of relief in which he struck out seven. Park, by contrast, used a staggering 11 pitchers.
Ethan Gustafson, Josue Franco Jr., and Aaron Bazan each recorded two hits in the victory.
The Warriors finish the regular season with a home double-header against Justice at Cortez High School on Saturday, the 35th, beginning at 11am.
