Warriors Baseball Drops Double-Header at Simpson
Finish 1-3 at Red Hawks over four-game weekend
The Nelson Warriors' baseball team (21-23) wrapped up their four-game series at Simpson Red Hawks with a doubleheader split, losing Game 1 by a score of 15-5 (7 innings – run-rule) and Game 2 by a score of 6-1, dropping the series 3 games to 1, while dropping below .500 after finally reaching the mark for the first time since mid-January.
Game 1: Simpson 15, Nelson 5 (7 innings – run-rule)
The Warriors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jimmy Holloway drove in Sam Hess with a single after the Warriors had put runners on first and second with one out. However, Simpson tied the game in the bottom of the inning, then broke it open with six runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to build a commanding 10-1 lead.
Nelson tried to claw back with two runs in the fifth when Gerardo Paco scored after Pedro Camacho reached on an error, and Brandon Ramirez drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in Ethan Gustafson. Aaron Bazan further added a solo home run (his 6th of the season) in the sixth, but Simpson responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth and four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 15-4. Nelson scored once more in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch that allowed Manny Bracamonte to score, but the run-rule was invoked after 6.5 innings with the final score 15-5.
Game 2: Simpson 6, Nelson 1
The nightcap was a much quieter affair offensively for the Warriors. Nelson managed only four hits all game and scored their lone run in the top of the sixth when Ethan Gustafson grounded out to shortstop, allowing Gerardo Paco to score from third.
Simpson scored steadily throughout scoring once in both the first and second and twice in the bottom of the third, then added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-1 victory and earn the series split.
