Warriors Baseball Snaps Losing-Streak
Buccaneers find that playing Nelson is no walk in the Park
The Nelson Warriors' baseball team (4-9) snapped a frustrating four-game losing streak in emphatic, dramatic fashion, jumping all over the Park Gilbert University Buccaneers for five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looking back en route to a dominant 11-6 victory at home.
The Warriors wasted no time putting pressure on the Park pirates when Sam Hess led off the bottom of the first by reaching on an error by the Buccaneer second baseman. Matthew Schulz followed immediately with the most exciting play in baseball—a scorching triple that plated Hess and ignited the home dugout. Next up, Ethan Gustafson drew a walk to put runners on the corners, and after an out, Jimmy Holloway ripped a double down the right-field line to drive in Gustafson from third. Shae Doree laid down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher that scored Gustafson (who had advanced to third on the double), and Aaron Bazan capped the explosive inning with a towering two-run home run to left-center, sending the Nelson faithful into a frenzy and staking the Warriors to a commanding 5-0 lead after just one half-inning.
The Buccaneers fought back, trading punches with Nelson in the early-middle frames with both teams scoring twice in the second and once each in the third, keeping the game tight. Park then chipped away further in the top of the fourth with three runs to cut the deficit to 7-5 and make the home dugout sweat a big.
But the Warriors had plenty left in the tank. They added breathing room in the sixth on a Jimmy Holloway sac fly that pushed the lead back to three. Further insurance runs came in the eighth when the Warriors put relentless pressure on Park's pitching staff: Manny Bracamont scored on a wild pitch, and Matthew Schulz came home on a balk to stretch the margin to 11-5.
Sam Hess led the charge at the plate with a season-high three hits, scoring three out of the four times he reached base. Schulz also crossed the plate three times, also reaching base four times on two hits and two walks in a strong all-around performance.
The bullpen once again proved lights-out for Nelson. Adrian Imperial earned the win in relief, and the trio of Imperial, Justin Burns, and Colton Ratfield combined for 5.2 strong innings, allowing just four hits and striking out eight while shutting down any late Park rally.
