Nelson Baseball is shutout against Benedictine of Mesa
Gritty effort for not as bats go cold with runners in scoring position
The Nelson University Warriors baseball team fell to the Benedictine Mesa Redhawks, 5-0 on Friday night, in a tightly contested matchup where the visitors seized control early and never looked back.
Benedictine Mesa erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second inning, capitalizing on a rally that began with the first four batters reaching base. The opening run came across on an RBI double with nobody out, followed by three straight Redhawks reaching with the bases loaded, a single, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk, to push the lead to 4-0 before the Warriors could stem the tide.
Nelson exemplified their Warriors spirit in response, putting two runners on with one out and positioning Matthew Schulz in scoring position, but the opportunity ultimately fizzled without a run crossing the plate. The Redhawks' pitching duo dominated from there, combining to scatter just five hits and issue only one walk while racking up 11 strikeouts over the course of the game.
Schulz stood out offensively for the Warriors, becoming the lone Nelson batter to collect multiple hits in the contest. Adrian Nunez contributed by drawing the team's solitary walk, reaching base to help keep some pressure on, but the Warriors couldn't generate enough consistent production against the stingy Redhawks staff.
