Warriors Baseball Split Twin-Bill
Nathan Simmons pitched a gem to secure the opener
The Nelson Warriors' baseball team (3-6) split a tough doubleheader, bouncing back from a lopsided 27-3 loss to British Columbia the day prior with a strong 8-1 victory over Embry-Riddle in Game 1, before falling to Oregon Tech 16-1 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Nelson 8, Embry-Riddle 1
The Warriors wasted no time resetting themselves following the loss to BCU when Sam Hess kicked off scoring in the bottom of the first with a single, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored when another wild pitch sailed to the backstop, giving Nelson an early 1-0 lead.
The floodgates opened in the second inning, when they loaded the bases for Pedro Camacho and Brandon Ramirez who drew back-to-back walks to plate two runs. Ethan Gustafson then delivered the knockout blow, a sharp bases-loaded single through the left side that drove in two more and chased the Eagles' starter after just three outs recorded. Nelson continued to build when they added three more in the third on back-to-back doubles: Ramirez ripped a two-run double, followed immediately by Hess driving him in with another two-bagger to make it 8-0.
Nathan Simmons was dominant on the mound, tossing six strong innings to earn his second win of the season. He allowed just 5 hits and 1 unearned run, walked 1, and struck out 9 on 102 pitches. Esteban Acevedo closed the door with three clean innings of relief, surrendering no runs to secure his second save of the year.
Game 2: Oregon Tech 16, Nelson 1
The second game was unfortunately a different story. Oregon Tech jumped on the Warriors early, plating 4 runs in the first inning, adding 2 more in the second, and 3 in the third to build a commanding 9-0 lead. The Owls then exploded for 7 runs in the fourth to blow the game open.
Nelson managed their lone run in the top of the seventh. After loading the bases, Ragan Johnson scored when Matthew Schulz reached on an error by the Oregon Tech shortstop. That was all the offense the Warriors could muster against a relentless Owls attack.
Up next for the Warriors will be Benedictine of Mesa at Cortez High School on Friday, February 13, at 7pm.
