Warriors Baseball Storms past Benedictine
Wins by a football score after breakout 6-9th innings
The Nelson Warriors stormed into Gene Autry Field hoping to build upon a two-game win streak, and delivered a dominant performance, coming back from behind seven runs through five innings to crush Benedictine (Mesa) 21-10, setting the season-high for runs scored in the process. After a slow start that saw the Warriors give up three runs in each of the bottom of the first, third, and fifth innings, Nelson erupted in the sixth inning, scoring six runs, igniting a scoring frenzy that would continue throughout each of the final frames.
Shortstop AJ Estill was the offensive hero, driving in an incredible nine RBIs on five hits, including two triples and a double, scoring three runs. His clutch hitting with runners in scoring position helped fuel the Warriors' late-inning surge that saw the visitors score no fewer than four runs in each of the final four innings. Batting second on manager Josh Milner's lineup card, Kaysen Kajiwara consistently set the table for Estill, reaching base five times in seven plate appearances, including four walks, and scoring four times.
Despite a shaky start from the pitching staff, the Warriors' bullpen firmed up, with relievers Eddie Aceves and Nathan Simmons (who earned the win) combining for three scoreless innings to shut down any hopes of a Benedictine comeback.
The Warriors' patience at the plate proved pivotal in the comeback victory, drawing 11 walks total to keep the pressure on the opposing pitching staff. The team attempted to capitalize on every opportunity, ultimately scoring 12 unanswered runs between the sixth and eigth innings, before four more in the ninth.
This dominant performance not only secured a much-needed win for Nelson University but also showcased their offensive firepower. The team's 21 runs, 21 hits, and four triples, each set season highs, setting a tone they hope to carry over into the final stretch of the season, including an important matchup against Arizona Christian at 7:30pm on March 19.
