Nelson Warriors Baseball Sweep Double-Header
Take down Dickenson State 4-2 and 3-2 on Friday, March 14
March 14, 2025
The Nelson University Arizona Warriors baseball team battled Dickinson State, winning both games on Friday March 14th, with scores of 4-2, and 3-2, respectively.
Strong pitching performances for the Warriors was the story of the day, as Eli Arsenault set the tone for the DH and series victory on the bump. Arsenault was brilliant, going 6 innings, inducing 7 strikeouts and allowing only 4 hits and 0 earned runs.
After an early unearned run for the Blue Hawks, Gerardo Paco laced a 2b down the left field line to get things started for the Warriors. Unfortunately, 2 loud outs from AJ Estill and Kaysen Kajiwara kept Nelson off the scoreboard. Arsenault got the Warrior bats back up the plate quickly, making efficient work in the 2nd and 3rd innings with 2 strikeouts and a 5-4-3 pitchers' best friend Double Play ball.
The third inning started with another hit from Paco. After he stole second, good situational hitting from AJ Estill helped him advance and eventually score on a wild pitch. With the score tied, Arsenault went back to work in the 4th, striking out 2 more as he mixed speeds and had dizzying movement on his changeup.
Great situational hitting was at the center of Warrior rallies in the 4th and 5th as well. Zach Walsh placed a perfectly executed bunt for a hit down third base to set the table. After stealing second and advancing to third, Matt Schultz scored him with a sacrifice fly. In the 5th, Kajiwara smashed a 2 out double to the gap and Walsh came through again with 2 strikes going with the pitch and hitting his own 2 out double to right field. Up 4-2 in the top of the 7th, Deondre Collier came in to pitch with a runner on first. He did a masterful job, picking off the runner and striking out the final batter to secure the victory for the Warriors. Offensively, Eddie Eceves had 3 hits, and Paco, Walsh and Franco each had two hits to lead the Nelson offense.
Game 2 had a similar script with fantastic pitching and some timely hitting setting up the victory. Esteban Acevedo got the nod on the mound for the Warriors, going 4.2 innings with 5 strikeouts and only 4 hits allowed and 0 Earned runs. In the first, Walsh again continued his hot hitting with another 2 out RBI, scoring Kajiwara.

The biggest moment came in the top of the 4th when Acevedo pitched out of a traffic jam, inducing a strikeout with runners in scoring position and a flyout with the bases loaded. Matthew Schultz came in to pitch during the top of the 5th with 2 runners on and 2 out, striking out the batter and preserving the lead. In the home half of the 5th, the Warriors continued their hot 2 out hitting with Walsh and Franco each hitting 2 out doubles to tack on 2 more runs. Both runs would be critical as the Blue Hawks scored 1 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th. With the tying run on second base and 2 outs, Eddie Eceves came in and got the final out for the Warriors in dramatic fashion.
The Warriors are back on the diamond, Tuesday March 18th at Benedictine Mesa at 6 pm.
